Combining feminine elegance with bombshell glamour, the 1950s were a stand out decade for fashion and it’s a period that’s being celebrated in a new London exhibition at Selfridges.
Capri pants, cinched waists, full sweeping skirts and dazzling
dresses all feature in Britannica 1951 – 1953, a display that Selfridges
says recreates key looks from the period as it “follows a day in the
life of a 50s fashionista.”
In honour of the black and white printed magazines and fashion books
of the day, the entire exhibition is produced in black, white and grey
and is punctuated with vivid champagne pink hats designed exclusively by
celebrity milliner Stephen Jones.
Overseen by key fashion curator Judith Clark, the exhibition was inspired by three British Vogue
editions printed each February between 1951 and 1953 to celebrate
British fashion in the aftermath of World War II and with the coronation
of the young Queen, Elizabeth II. The one vintage piece featured in the display - in Selfridges from 4 May
to 24 June - is a gown from the Royal family’s favourite designer of
the time, Victor Stiebel.
